My name is Kiana Young and I'm the assistant athletic trainer at the University of Toledo for softball and women's golf. So I work under the University of Toledo Athletics to Sports Medicine Department and our goal is to provide the best care to our student athletes of all sports making sure that they're healthy and if they're injured that they return to their playing status fully and to the sport they enjoy. So as an athletic trainer I provide coverage of games, practices and lift as well as doing evaluations, rehabilitation and treatments for our student athletes and their injuries. But essentially, we're there almost before, during, and after athletic activities and we're there for patient care. So for example, if we have somebody who is experiencing let's say, muscle tightness or soreness we can do different treatments or care for them and if they're injured, we do rehabilitation but we also work with a sports medicine team so it's not just myself as the athletic trainer. We work with physicians, nutritionist, sports psychologist and on our staff we have an insurance coordinator who also works for different parties. So it's a multi collaborative approach. I can walk you through the day in life of a softball athlete. So for example, Mondays there is lift at 6:15 and practice later on in the day at 1:45 to possibly around 4:30 PM. So as an athletic trainer I'm there before to set up water for hydration so that way they're hydrated during practices or lift. And then if anyone needs any sort of care before lift if they need to warm up properly or do some of their rehabilitative exercises to help them feel ready for lift. Then after lift we do after treatments the same way like whatever they need specifically, we can attend to that. And in between those hours, depending on their class schedules, we may schedule different rehabs or if they have a long-term or postsurgical injury they work with our physical therapist. But that's why we also collaborate and we are there for like all aspects of their care.
